12 Avatars: Greed and Vanity.... Or???

Oh my, in a world where looking great is only a matter of stopping at the right shops and buying some decent skin (yay), hair, clothes and accessories and play around with the shape sliders for a while, it's incredible how eager everyone is to be in beauty pageants and model contests. Let alone the shameless self promotion on the various blogs and feeds.

Sorry, but the "vote for me" bogus is actually repulsing and i was about to ignore the whole thing... until I read Natalia Zelmanov's blog post that put it all back into perspective for me. 12 Avatars is a charity action to fight hunger, and maybe contributions are small, but every penny, every L$ helps. And what's maybe more important: it creates AWARENESS that a lot of people all over the world are starving which is totally unnecessary if only the available food is fairly distributed.

Natalia has vowed herself to donate the 20k prize money to the charity, as well as 10L$ for every vote that she receives. Natalia was elected Miss Second Life last year, also because of her philantropical mentality, and this proves once more that the jury has chosen a worthy person to carry that title.

So don't go looking for me... but follow me to the site and vote for charity at booth 37F, not for greed and vanity.

Maybe it's just my mood today but several points ....seem a little off. Not only about this post but about Natalia's. For one thing, it's against the rules to offer payment (as I understand it) of any kind in return for votes. For another, the assumption that no other avatar has worth while reasons for participating seems a bit unfair. Finally, the people who will actually profit the most from 12avatars are those who distribute the calendar. Only 2 avatars out of the twelve who will appear will receive any prizes of any kind at all. That clearly then can not be the only reason to participate.

Imo, any post which draws attention to 12avatars and its goals is a good post. It's still free advertising for the site. Isn't that what we say about posting reviews?

My 2L.

Hey Delilah,

yeah could be your mood... could be mine too. What I am really annoyed with is just the begging for votes on th blogs (and remarks like "hey I need land" and stuff). In that aspect Natalia's pledge is refreshing. And she is not actually offering payment for a vote, she is just saying that for every vote she receives she will donate 10 L$ to the charity. I don't think that is against the rules. It would be if she would pay you or me for our votes.

Free advertisement.... to the point people get so annoyed with it that they won't even think about voting, participating or contributing? Dunno if that is the free advertisement a charity needs... but then again.. could be me... Let's donate our 2 L$s to charity?

Sounds like a plan. :)

It's official, greed and vanity win out over altruism, as the update on Natalia's blog will show.

I'm not going near this thing with a 10 foot pole. And yes, I am aware that proceeds from the sale of the calendar go to charity. But after some of the behaviour I have seen as a result of this contest, I am left with a sour taste in my mouth. It's OK to tell people to cheat by voting for you with their alts, its OK to beg for votes because you need the money for some superficial purpose, but god forbid you should suggest people vote for you because you want to do some good for others.

this was the most lousy campaing to get votes in my opinion. "Vote agianst hunger" HEllo???!! it was a beauty contest to get in a calendar and, it was unfair because i also red her blog and she did offer free hair for all avatrs voting for her, and this was forbidden. Rules of 12 vavatrs. Really i think it was a thought through way of self promotion herself and her brand in sl and NOT for the actual good cause she claimed ,showing off her good Samaritan site. natalia got bootet out of this contest and in my opinion that was the only right thing to do.

Ooooh.. and you are just the sweetest thing to comment on this after more than 6 months and lash out at Natalia again? You would have had a point if you did this late September, but late April??? And as far as self promotion goes... I am considering removing your comment on the RAC article where you porttrait yourself as a "professionel shape maker" and offer your consultancy... Pot calling the kettle black??

I rest my case.. ain't she sweet.. this came in on the mail..I prefer an open discussion, so I'll go ahead and post is for her:

"Go ahead and delete it all I offered was help cause so many of the commentaries had big problems with thier shape, and the 2nd is this was a comment on a blog no competition with rules or anything like that the only rule was to keep it decent no cursing or anything. But ok if u want to make a big thing out of it then do it. plus I just found this blog and read throughly and saw this entry I didnt look from when it was, not to far from the rac one, means your Blog isnt ver< active then.... comments were still allowed so I commented didnt know it was for bidden after 6 month :)

But you seem very nice and friendly so all left to say is thank you as the "Professional shape maker" that I am and wish you a good one,

Oh and dont worry of course I wont tell anyone about your derailment ;)"

Derailment?? Hmm.. interesting
